I like Traffic Jam: CommeDe’s 2014 Open Studio
Period: 8 weeks, January 24 - March 21, 2014 (3hrs/week)
Studio Outline:
Bangkok has a reputation for heavy traffic congestion. Commuters sometimes spend almost two hours moving less than a kilometre when they get into a jam in downtown Bangkok. This workshop aims to develop the power of positive thinking by encouraging students to look on the bright side of traffic jam. In the first half of this eight week workshop, students will assign to create a series of photographs, pattern designs, text-based works and audio video works based on their observations collected at the ten most congested roads in Bangkok. The last three weeks of the workshop, each student will do an individual project inspired by traffic congestion and the project outcomes will be exhibited.
According to Thai Traffic Police statistics in 2013, the Bangkok’s ten most-congested roads are Lad Phrao Road, Rama IV Road, Ratchadaphisek Road, Sukhumvit Road, Phahonyothin Road, Ramkhamhaeng Road, North Sathorn Road, Wipawadee Rangsit Road, Phetchaburi Road and Ratchadamnoen Klang Road. Each week students will choose roads to observe in traffic congestion during the morning and evening rush hours. Since the traffic volume can change at different times of the day, different days of the week and different routes, the different types of data can be collected from various data sources. The collection of data through observation will be used to complete each project. The workshop will include short lectures on issues relating to the assigned projects and individual project.
